Do Women See Themselves as Victims of Men?

March 25, 2007 / by johnlance

The Brooklyn Museum has devoted a substantial portion of the 4th floor devoted solely to Women in the Arts. They covered every aspect. Photography, Sculpture,Video, Paintings, Ceramics, etc. The main theme seemed to me to be a concentration on their reproductive parts of the anatomy in particular Vagina's and Breasts.
Right: Women are as sexual as men and relate to not only the pleasures of sex but to the wonder of bringing forth life in this world. While it is true that women feel that they are treated by men as inferior and taken advantage of, as there are men who are predators so there are women. We all know that there are women who are pedifiels as witness the recent news stories of two female teachers taking advantage of 13 year old boys. I remember when I was thirteen I was very into girls and liked older women. I doubt if I would consider having sex with an older women as rape but rather a lesson in the facts of life. (Boy am I going to get socked on this one) I certainly am not promoting that older women seduce and have sex with thirteen year old boys. The fact is that nature has provided that some "boys" of thirteen mature earlier than others. They have pubic and face hair, and engage in masterbation and are able to make babies. Girls too have this same development. Mind you I do not say all children develop at thirteen into being capable of reproduction all I am pointing out is that nature has given us at a very young age the drive to have sex and reproduce. After all what is sex all about but to reproduce. Don't kid yourself the maker of us all in order to make sure you reproduce made it pleasureable.
Womens breasts became an object of men's desire. The female breast is what attracts a man in the first instance. I'll qualify that with the fact that some men are attracted to a woman by other parts of her anatomy.
Judy Chicago, a great artist and many other women artists have put together an amazing and beautiful portrait of women through the centuries. I am not going to tell you all about it but it is worthwhile seeing. What impressed me was the vehicle chosen by these women artists is the Vagina. The piece represents a dinner having 39 women going back in time thousands of years to the present. The dinner plates are decorated as Vagina's. When I looked at the plates I could actually see what they were trying to tell me. Example: Eleanor of Acquatain who was the Queen of France and married Henry the Second and imprisoned by him for sixteen years her vagina is depicted as having a penis and testicles. For the moment I wondered why. It came to me.
She had three sons. All plotting to kill Henry and then each other to gain the crown. Eleanor had to be strong to go against the will of Henry and she did not fear him. She knew that Henry would not put her to death because she was a queen of France and it might lead to a war. He married her to gain some of the French Provinces which she brought with her as a dowry and he could not afford to lose them. (A great movie about this with Katherine Hepburn called the Lion in Winter-you can get it out of the library as a CD maybe, I'm not sure.)
Women, you are the ones having the boys and if those boys become monsters and mistreat you who is to blame.? Women for the most part raise the children and are their teachers. If boys are taught to treat women with respect and honor them then chances are we would have far less problems in the abuse department. If women abuse their children they become abusers. It is not one sided that the men are all terrible. God bless the women, one and all for they are the bedrock of our civilization but guys, (not meant in a defamatory way) the men depend on you and know whether macho or not. You are the keystone of our civilization and wield more power than you admit to or think. The old saying that behind every king sits a woman on the throne.

Wrong: John Lance you got it all wrong. Women are abused by men and most men are monsters. Women are discriminated against and History show this and your view is definitely not in tune with reality. If not for the women's movement and the fight that women have to make to gain what is rightfully theirs goes on. In the Moslem world women are treated as objects. They have no rights. They have no right for custody of their children. The man is the dominant force and women are subservant. A man doe not know what it is to be a woman he has not walked in her shoes. A woman can not go out to dinner alone she has to have a man as an escort. Women who have no men are looked down upon. A woman has it very very hard. She is under pressure to get married and have children. She has a time clock to do it. She has a limited number of eggs and years to concieve. A woman has it the hardest. Not only does she have the pressure of getting married early so as to have children but if she wants a career and/or has to work after having children and a husband, she has twice the burden of any man. After working all day, she has to come home and cook dinner and then help the children with their homework and problems while the men go out to relax. It is true that a woman's work is never done. You must have misunderstood the significance of those plates showing vagina's. We women will and must continue to battle on for our right to be treated as equals with men.

Some do, some don't. Some is, some ain't. When you're hot you're hot, when you're not you're not. Simplicity.

Sorry I gave both sides of the argument. Women feel they have no power and this display is to show the world that women want to be empowered same as men. However I wish I could understand your critisism. Can you explain some do some don't etc.

Tired of women using what they perceive as male behavior to get their own back. There is still institutionalized discrimination against women but it is waning. I should know. I survived the 50s in office work. Abusive personalities do not belong exclusively to one gender. I hate the revenge motive that drives people to behave like monsters and in doing so breed more monsters.

Agreed. There are evil women as there are evil men. The article was meant to point out some facts and raise the readers interest to the point of thinking about it. You mention that in the 50's you did have a taste of it. Well sad to say the newpapers from time to time report abuses of women who are members of the armed forces, police department, firedepartment. About the only place that abuse in the service is not complained about are the nurses. You see these guys would not dare mistreat these ladies. I agree the feminist movement at times gets silly but basically they point out the inequality that exists. It need not be abuse to can be in salary and position in companies. Today you have more female CEO's than at any other time that I can remember. I hope you enjoyed the article

The two debater, "right" and "wrong," both appeared to treat "women" as a hommogeneous lot. But of course, they are not. Some women behave and have the opinions attributed to them by "right" and some do not. We're all individuals. Attempts by sociologists and anthropologists to speak of men and women as groups are to be understood -- or should always be understood -- as _statistically significant_ representations (when they're accurate). The prototypes described by "right" and "wrong" work fine in a court of law where the decision must be "up" or "down," i.e., binary. But in the world outside the courthouse, the way we are is more of the analog variety than the binary. But, then, you knew all that. You were just trying to give me something to argue about. Of course women are individuals but please take note: Betty Friedan and many other influential women have advanced the women's movement. Of course there is a group of women content with their lot and don't believe in the woman's liberation movement but do you watch Oprah? Do you watch 48 hours? I can list more T.V. Shows depicting how horrible the "men" are. Of course there are many, many good men, good people regardless of gender. I was merely stating the view of the Womens Lib Movement which exists today. Did you ever hear Barbara Walters describe her treatment when she entered into what was an exclusive men's club? I think you took the wrong view of it. Nostradamus was an open minded scientist of his day. He is known for his predications of course and that covers another discussion. You know there are people who say he was a fraud and that he predicted nothing. I of course am a believer. I am impressed by his visualizing the death of a King in a jousting tournment by predicting exactly how it would happen. A rare chance that a lance would pierce the armored helmut entering the kings eye, killing him. He also predicted correctly that the Queens children would become Kings and Queens of Europe and that some would die. In closing: I am not presenting an argument in this piece but rather both sides of a view and of course being as you say an individual I have my own view of things. I do agree that for the most part women get the dirty end of the stick. Visit the matrimonial parts of the various courts and you will see what I mean. California is the one state that stands out in my mind that gives 50/50 division in divorce cases. New York and other states go by "equitable distribution" Yeah equitable for the men not the women. I can give you both sides of this too but take it from me, women in New York rarely get the upper hand. Of course you can show some who screwed the men and took it all but I wager they are in the minority. Keep it coming. I enjoy the repartee.

John. I must apologize. I did not read your article as carefully as I should have. I completely missed that you were focused on women's image of themselves, and for the most part you are absolutely right. But "wrong" also makes a good case. I would not agree that :most men are monsters" but enough are that angels like you and me get branded by their deeds.

"Lion in Winter" was a great movie, and an equally good stage play. I was privileged two decades or so ago to play the Peter O'Toole (Henry II) part in a local production. I was only a shade better than O'Toole. [LOL][LOL]
